Zendaya cast in ‘Spider-Man’ reboot
Zendaya has been caught in the web of Sony's "Spider-Man" reboot.
The Disney Channel actress pasted her screen-tests opposite star Tom Holland, who plays the titular superhero and his alter ego Peter Parker to land a role in the franchise, Variety is reporting.
The top-secret part is not believed to have a lot of screen time in the movie that hits theaters July 28, 2017, but will grow in future sequels.
She won't be playing a new version of Peter Parker's famous love interests — Mary Jane Watson, played by Kristen Dunst in the "Spider-Man" trilogy, or Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone in the "Amazing Spider-Man." films.
Deadline reported that Zendaya, 20, will be playing a character named Michelle, possibly based on Parker's former roommate from the comics named Michelle Gonzalez.
The casting of Zendaya, who was famous to a generation of kids for her show, "Shake It Up!" and to her parents for her run on "Dancing With the Stars," fits with Marvel and Sony's plan to return the superhero to his comic roots as a teenager.
Spider-Man is at the center of a blockbuster deal between Marvel and Sony. To comic fans' delight, the character will be rebooted with the more popular Marvel shared cinematic universe in this summer's "Captain America: Civil War."
Sony, however, still maintains rights to the standalone "Spider-Man" films, though Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige will be a co-producer on the first flick with former Sony president Amy Pascal.
Directed by Jon Watts, the movie also will star Marisa Tomei as Aunt May.
